We were contacted to provide an addition to a small commercial building constructed in 1968. The mid-century design provided an opportunity to bring in some modern materiality and sensibility while maintaining the historical style of the building
Our solution was to provide a seismic separation between the buildings and explore new materials in an effort to emphasize the new addition. The new addition is set back from the existing building to articulate the original building while allowing the new wing to establish a fresh visual presence along the street. A new taller element was added at the west end of the addition to mirror the original building’s form. A horizontal overhang was added over the south-facing windows to match the existing overhang, as well as prevent solar gain. A refined overhang and colonnade frame a new ADA compliant rear entry establishing a new connection from the parking lot to the new addition.
