Heavy Metal

Riverside, CA, 2010

A local artisan contacted us to help him explore shipping containers as a new sustainable residence.

A pragmatic “3 over 3” nine container arrangement was chosen as a starting point for experimentation. Our solution was to create a series of horizontal and vertical open spaces weaving thru the building while keeping much of the container’s raw materials exposed. A ventilated central stair and skylight form the nucleus of the space while a series of full and partial height partitions define the individual functions.

A metal framework of screens and photovoltaic panels will wrap the metal enclosure establishing both a venue for solar power as well as screening the home from the harsh sunlight. Windows will be oriented to allow the prevailing breezes to cool the building and maximize daylight while minimizing solar gain.

The location on a prominent ridge will offer fantastic views of the local mountains and the green roof and patio will serve as a quiet garden for rest and contemplation.
