Panorama

Redlands, CA, 2009

This new home is sitting on a prominent ridge in the hills of Redlands, California. The site offers a stunning view of the San Bernardino mountains and surrounding vistas.

The home takes its inspiration from the classic California Modern style with an emphasis on orientation and sustainability. The advantageous hilltop site allows the home to be oriented on the desirable east-west axis. The plan retains a thin profile to allow maximum views, cross ventilation and ample natural light. The north elevation opens to a panoramic view of the scenic mountains while the south side of the home’s broad overhang protects the entry court from the hot summer sun.

The primary roof slope is designed to accommodate an array of photovoltaic panels and the 2 story bedroom volume acts as a thermal siphon to help exhaust the warmer air from the home. Among the carefully considered environmental details are; Parklex timber exterior panels, Icynene insulation, heat recovery ventilators, solar hot water heaters, LED lighting and energy star appliances. The home is currently in the construction documents phase and targeted to receive a LEED Silver rating.
